John was born January 11, 1939, in Green Mountain, IA, to Harold and Margie Stubbs. He graduated with the Class of 1957 from Green Mountain High School. John was united in marriage to Mildred Michels on June 14, 1959, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marshalltown. He worked at Ritchie Manufacturing in Conrad, IA, American Fire Apparatus in Marshalltown, and Fisher Controls in Marshalltown. After retiring from a 32-year career at Fishers, John went on to work 14 years at Pursel Davis Funeral Home and for several area farmers. He was a member of The Loyal Order of Moose, The Knights of Columbus, and a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Marshalltown. John was a self-taught musician who played with various musical groups for over 45 years. Mildred joined him as a band member for over 35 of those years. His love of music and the many friendships made through the years moved him to initiate The Old Timers Reunion Jam, an annual event for 11 years, enjoyed by local musicians and their followers. John was one of several people instrumental in creating the Marshalltown Girl's Softball Association. He enjoyed fishing, paddling his canoe, camping, and loved watching a good softball game. John also enjoyed the park at the farm with his family. John and Mildred rode his 1951 Farmall-M tractor in the annual Green Mountain Tractor Ride.
John will be missed by his wife, Mildred; daughters Lorri (David) Kearns of DeSoto, KS, Jo (Mike) Mostrom of Ames, IA, Carolyn (Jeff) Himes of Marshalltown, IA; grandchildren Gary (Maureen) Kearns, Samantha Kearns, Aaron Mostrom, Levi Mostrom, Melissa (Joe) Ghormley, Amy Stiehl, Brett (John) Himes-Downey, Ashleigh (Bob) Sager; seven great grandchildren, and one on the way in November; two great great grandchildren; sisters Deloris Nelson and Lois Stubbs; sisters-in-law Veleta (Walt) Tintjer, Carol Parks, Barbara (Don) Lynk, Judy Michels, and Delores Dunham. Mildred & family,
You are in my thoughts as I read this sad news. It was a joy to have known John. Being in one of the 1st bands with you both when I moved to Marshalltown in 1980, I remember those times with great fondness. Blessings to you and there family.
Mildred and family, As you know John was a very close cousin with me and my family while I was younger and lived in Farnhamville. We still had some reunions when I came back from Virginia. John and the other “Stubb boys” (Alva’s) came back to visit Mom (their Aunt Geneva) often before she passed away. I will always remember that. God bless you and your family

My sympathies to you Mildred and your entire family. The times we were able to get together since high school always reminded me of John's great sense of humor. Hearing him laugh and seeing him smile was a real joy. I will miss him and so will the whole Green Mountain Class of 1957.

Mrs. Stubbs I am so sorry to hear of Johns passing. I worked with him for many years at Fishers and he was always a delight to be around. I won' t be able to make the funeral but I will be saying a rosary for him.
Sincere condolences to John's family. I enjoyed spending time with John at Knoxville Nationals years ago and sharing his passion for motorcycle flat track racing. He always was upbeat and positive at work and set a high bar for professionalism at work.
