Sara was born on April 20, 1932, Palo, Iowa. The daughter of Humphrey and Ida (Williams) Carbaugh. Sara attended Atkins school where she was on the girl's basketball team. Sara married Robert Schwab in 1950 and later divorced. They had four children, Joe and Terry (Denise) Schwab; all from Belle Plaine, Karla (Robert) Mall; Augusta, GA and Lisa (John) Blabaum, Liscomb; IA.
Sara's fondest memories are growing up in rural Palo with her seven brothers and sisters. She had a volunteer's heart as a founding volunteer for Benton County Hospice and various duties at the Iowa Veterans Home. She was quick to provide treats, transportation and sewing outfits for her daughters and their school friends all while serving as a farm wife and business owner administrator in rural Belle Plaine. She was an assistant manager and did alterations for Hope's Bridal Boutique, an administrative assistant at Dr. Thomasson's dental office in Belle Plaine, as well as a personal care assistant to one special lady. After her move off the farm and to Marshalltown, she continued her church quilting group for some time, traveling back to Belle Plaine weekly. Eventually she found a group of ladies to quilt with in Marshalltown and they became fast friends, till the end. She was healthy and happy in her independence most of her 89 years.
Sara was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Harry, Humphrey Jr. and John, sisters Florence, Joan, Mary and baby Dorothy.
Survivors include her sons and daughters. Eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Sara had a giving heart. Honor Sara at your wish to the charity of your choice.
I loved getting to know Sarah for the past almost two decades! Sitting in her apartment sharing a laugh, at the Veterans home and in exercise class! She was a gem! I will always cherish time spent with her! Jump on your horse Sarah, make a clicking sound and ride on!!
Lisa and Family: So very sorry to learn of your mom. She was such a kind and caring individual. She was such a dear friend to my mother, Pat Jahnke at the apartments. After my mom passed, Sara and I kept in touch. I so enjoyed visiting with her. Unfortunately due to COVID, had not seen her for quite some time. Am glad that I remembered to call her for her birthday.
The family is in our thoughts and prayers.
So sorry for your loss, I surely appreciated her assistance with projects with the therapy program at IVH. Such a sweet/patient lady. She is in heaven now helping god with all sewing needs.
So sorry and surprised to see that Sara passed. Jeff and I were just talking about her the other day about how sweet she was. We were managers at the apartment for several years before resigning last March. We had lots of chats with Sara. Special lil lady.

Lisa and family- I am so sorry to hear about your Mom passing. I was just thinking about her the other day and remembering the exercise classes at the Senior Center that my Dad and your Mom attended. I was wishing that things hadn’t changed so drastically in our lives with the tornado ruining the senior center and then the Covid19 keeping everyone stuck away in their homes without the company of friends to help them to stay active and alert. I am so sorry for your loss. She was such a wonderful lady. So sweet, kind, thoughtful and friendly! I really liked her. I will tell Dad about her passing and I am sure he will be pretty sad, also. Hugs to you. Let us know if you need anything. We’re here for you.
