Gertrude "Dottie" Pennington was born July 31, 1932 in Gideon, Missouri to Wilson and Grace (Osborne) Brown. Dottie was united in marriage to Dennis Bornholdt on October 2, 1948 in Clinton, Iowa. The couple had two children together and lived in the Davenport area until his passing in 1952. Dottie later moved with her children to Tucson, Arizona where she met the second love of her life, Charles (Chuck) Pennington. Dottie and Chuck were married on April 18, 1956 in Tucson where Chuck was stationed at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. Dottie and Chuck went on to have two children together and Chuck adopted Dottie's two daughters from her first marriage. As a military family, they moved often throughout their lives, being stationed mainly in the Southwest United States and West Germany. In 1974 they retired from military life and moved back to Chuck's hometown of Marshalltown, Iowa. Throughout her life Dottie worked at various jobs in retail sales/accounting, finishing her career at Younkers in Marshalltown in the late 1980's. Her one true calling, however, was as a loving Mom and Grandmother to her large extended family. After retirement, Dottie and Chuck loved wintering in Texas where he would fish and she would read and visit with friends. Dottie was active in various churches throughout her life and was a member of Redeemer Lutheran church at the time of her passing. Dottie enjoyed reading, baking, gardening, playing cards, quilting, sewing and crocheting, but mostly she loved spending time with family and friends. In 2016 Dottie and Chuck moved to The Embers where she loved making new friends, playing cards, tossing bean bags and many other activities. Dottie will be truly missed by her family and friends.

Dottie is survived by her three children; Linda (David) Schroeder of San Antonio, Texas, Brad (Kathy) Pennington of Marshalltown, Iowa, Audrey (Skip) McConnell of Eldora, Iowa, two brothers, Dale Brown of Missouri and Norman Brown of Kansas, 11 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 27 great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both husbands, a daughter, Debbie Stotts, a grandson, Daniel Schroeder, a great granddaughter, Chyanne Wind, two sisters and seven brothers.

Dear Pennington family,
We feel so blessed to know and have known Dottie, the matriarch of your family. We have fond memories of events and talking in church. Dottie always had kind word, a smile, and a hug. Had forgotten that she shared Esther’s birthday and she always remembered that. We will be thinking of you on Thursday as you grieve and more importantly celebrate her life and your family memories. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Sincerely, Daryl and Pauline Bennett

We are so sorry to hear of Dottie's passing. James and Chuck were on jury duty together and somehow realized they were related. For many years, we exchanged Christmas cards. I hadn't met Dottie until one day at Hobby Lobby when I stopped her (recognizing her from Facebook) and introduced myself. I had become very fond of her through Facebook and the lovely cards. You can tell from all of the posts she made and those made by her family, she loved you all and was loved so much. Prayers to you all. James and Melissa Sears

I am so saddened by Dottie’s death. What a sweetheart she was and a great Christian example to all. Though I will really miss her, she and Chuck are once again together with their Lord and Savior at “Home” in Heaven. It doesn’t get any better than that. My prayers are with all the Pennington family.

Dottie was like a second mother to me, she was always ther to talk to when I needed her. Her and Chuck were the best neighbors a person could ever have. They got us going to Texas, we have so many memories of them! She will be missed, my heart is broken today💔
